Nicosia Weather

For approximately a thousand years, Nicosia has been the capital of Cyprus and its largest city. With that being said, Nicosia holds much of the island’s history and traditions and it serves as the main business center of Cyprus. As for its location, it is roughly in the middle of the island many kilometers away from the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, Nicosia’s climate differs from other towns of Cyprus, Limassol for instance, that are lies just on the southern coast of the island. As a result, during summer Nicosia is much hotter than Limassol and much colder during winters. There is a difference of an average 4°C all year round (higher in the summer and lower in winter). During the summer months July and August for example, the typical temperature during the day is 37°C unlike cities closer to the coast that has temperatures of 4°C to 7°C less. During night time in July and August, temperatures drop to 22°C in Nicosia. The coldest months of the year are January and February and the temperatures during those times drop to 16°C during the day and 6°C at nighttime, while the temperatures of the cities located closer to the coast are 2°C-3°C more. As for its altitude, it is approximately 162 meters over the sea level.

Nicosia, like every capital city, contains a lot of history within it and tourists who look to discover the past or what the island of Cyprus has to offer historically, they find Nicosia to be the perfect place to visit. Tourists choose to visit Nicosia for its famous Venetian walls that surround the city along with many churches, museums and galleries of art. Due to the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974, Nicosia is the only capital in the world that is divided and a lot of tourists visit the city to see the Green Line that separates the northern and southern parts. They also love the fact that they can spend up to 13 hours a day of sunlight (especially during the summer months) and enjoy a long day of sightseeing with many of the attraction that were mention earlier.

The summer in Nicosia is dry and the days are longer as well much hotter. During July and August, the habitats of Nicosia choose to spend their days by the beach (the most common destinations being the Ayia Napa and Protaras areas of the eastern coast of Cyprus) due to the hot weather and the high temperatures which rise above the mid-thirties.

Nicosia is considered by many the place to be during spring and autumn when the temperatures are approximately 21°C to 25°C and nightlife ends in daytime. During spring, flowers of diverse colors and smells provide tourists with unique scenery of blossom and a feeling of harmony. If you wish to spend your time enjoying beautiful sceneries, you should visit during spring or autumn, as the flourished flowers give their place to red and gold leaves and to temperatures averaging to 25°C, with 10 hours of sunshine daily. Spring and autumn are the perfect seasons to visit Nicosia if you wish to discover its beauties without having to deal with big crowds and endless buses full of European and Russian tourist. Humidity is also almost perfect during these seasons.

During winter time and specifically during December and January, sunshine hours drop to 6 per day and thus the days are colder. Usually temperatures drop to as low as 5°C but the average temperature is about 12°C.
